Malaria Parasites are spread through Mosquitoes and can be identified by examining under the microscope with a drop of the patient’s blood, spread out as a “blood smear” on a microscope slide. Prior to examination, the specimen is stained (most often with the Giemsa stain) to give the parasites a distinctive appearance. This technique remains the gold standard for laboratory confirmation of malaria. Testing is performed to help diagnose malaria, to monitor for relapses, and to determine drug susceptibility of the parasite causing the infection. Diagnosis of malaria involves performing blood smears.“Pf” stands for Plasmodium falciparum and “Pv” stands for Plasmodium vivax. These are two different species of parasites that causes malaria in humans. Pf causes the most acute, severe form of the disease, which can have a cerebral manifestation (“cerebral malaria”). Pv is still a serious disease, but usually less severe. If diagnosed early, both forms can be easily treated and are completely curable.
