Maternal serum progesterone levels rise slowly to 40 ng/mL near the end of the first trimester and then increase progressively to reach 150 ng/mL, at term. Low levels of progesterone (less than 10 ng/mL) at 6 to 8 weeks signify an abnormal intrauterine pregnancy or an ectopic pregnancy.
