Typhus is an infectious bacterial disease caused by one or more rickettsia bacteria. Fleas, mites (chiggers), lice, and ticks spread it when they bite you. Fleas, mites, lice, and ticks are examples of arthropods, which are invertebrates. The bacteria that cause typhus is transmitted when arthropods carrying rickettsia bacteria bite someone. Scratching the bite further opens the skin, allowing bacteria to enter the bloodstream.
